About
The Gate Lodge > Restoration and Conservation Efforts

In June of 2004, the restored Gate Lodge officially opened its doors to the public for the first time in 89 years.  Hallowed ground for millions of people worldwide, it is deemed the birthplace of Alcoholics Anonymous.

The main floor hosts a special exhibit celebrating and recounting the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous, and the restoration is in keeping with the standards of an accredited museum, National Historic Landmark, and a monument to a force that has positively impacted individuals and their families for nearly 70 years.  The Gate Lodge at Stan Hywet is now a major destination for members of Alcoholics Anonymous from around the world.

The next phase of the restoration project is to replant the Gate Lodge landscape to that in historic photographs and diagrams.  The landscape design is being directed by John Seiberling, son of F.A. and Gertrude Seiberling. The plan calls for the grounds immediately around the Gate Lodge to be returned to the plantings of John Seiberling and his sisters' childhoods, a time which includes the formative years of Alcoholics Anonymous. Research for the project is now complete and work is to begin as soon as necessary funding is secured.
