Founders' Day Weekend at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens June 10-12, 2011 10am-4pm
Stan Hywet honors the 76th anniversary of the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) at its Gate Lodge during Founders' Day weekend, June 10-12. It was in the Gate Lodge on Mother's Day, 1935 that Henrietta Buckler Seiberling brought together for a discussion her friend Dr. Bob Smith, a prominent Akron surgeon and Mr. Bill Wilson, a New York stockbroker. Two admitted alcoholics, the meeting went long into the evening, where the principles that still serve as the cornerstone of AA were identified.
The Gate Lodge was formally dedicated as the "Birthplace of Alcoholics Anonymous" in 2000. It was restored and reopened to the public in 2004, with an exhibit that highlights this historic event.
Details • Free admission to the Gate Lodge, June 10-12. • Exclusive Gate Lodge merchandise for sale at the Gate Lodge and in the Molly's Shop & Cafe. • Free transportation to and from Founders' Day activities at Stan Hywet to activities at The University of Akron on Saturday June 11 from 10am - 4pm.
