2008 Events at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens

General information about visiting Stan Hywet:
During the 2008 season, we are open Tuesdays through Sundays, 10 am - 6pm.
The front gate and admissions open at 10:00 a.m and close at 4:30 p.m. House and guided tours begin at 11:00 a.m. and the grounds are open until 6:00 p.m.

Stan Hywet is closed on Mondays EXCEPT Memorial Day and Labor Day.



2008 Events


Stan Hywet  is  open for the 2008 season.  Open Tuesday - Sunday 10am-6pm (admission closes at 4:30pm). The entire estate (including Manor House, Conservatory, garden and grounds) is closed to the public on Mondays.

A Period of Perspective: The Art of Gertrude Penfield Seiberling
The wife of F.A. Seiberling, Gertrude Seiberling was a prolific painter of portraits, landscapes and other subjects. This exhibit features a comprehensive look at her portfolio.  In the Music Room of the Manor House.

Great Garden Adventure
Designed to enhance the experience of nature and the enjoyment of the Stan Hywet property, Great Garden Adventure will take advantage of rarely used areas on the perimeter of the Stan Hywet property.

Farmers' Market (RAIN OR SHINE)

The Farmers' Market at Stan Hywet is conveniently located right next to the parking lot. About thirty vendors will sell locally grown and organic fruits and vegetables, locally raised and hormone/antibiotic-free and grass-fed beef, pork and bison, award-winning cheese and artisan baked goods, cut flowers and other specialty food items near the parking lot at Stan Hywet. There will also be entertainment and cooking demos at each market.

Wine Tasting Series at Stan Hywet: Vino Italiano!
7-9 pm
Wine tasting featuring Italian wines, sponsored by Papa Joe’s Restaurant.
Each wine tasting at Stan Hywet includes light appetizers from Two Hungary Sisters Catering and live entertainment by the Rolando Pizana Duo.

October 1-31
Fall at Stan Hywet
The month of October is an autumn showcase of the estate’s grounds and gardens during one of Ohio’s most beautiful seasons. Giant hand-painted and one-of-a-kind “scarecrows” created by Robin VanLear, Artistic Director of Community Arts at The Cleveland Museum of Art, and fall horticulture displays of haystacks, pumpkins and gourds will be the backdrop for a variety of special activities for all ages.

October 2-5
Ohio Mart & Stitchery Showcase
10am-5pm 
Ohio Mart is an Akron tradition and features more than 120 artisans and craftspeople. The event takes place on the grounds of Stan Hywet and everything from one-of-a-kind art pieces to tempting and freshly baked treats is available. Organized by the Women’s Auxiliary Board of Stan Hywet, this volunteer-run event is a major fundraiser for the estate; its proceeds are donated to support ongoing restoration and preservation efforts at the Museum.

Stitchery Showcase is presented by the Stan Hywet Needlework Guild and is a juried exhibit of the timeless art of stitchery. Judges in each category (counted thread, canvas, surface stitchery multimedia or quilting) award first, second, third or honorable mention ribbons to entrants. Judging is based on color, design and texture of each piece. The Showcase is open to any needle worker —membership in the Guild is not a requirement.

Wine Tasting at Stan Hywet: The Vast World of Zinfandels
7-9 pm
Enjoy sparkling zins, whites and big reds as we explore this very unusual grape.
Each wine tasting at Stan Hywet includes light appetizers from Two Hungary Sisters Catering and live entertainment by the Rolando Pizana Duo.


October 25
Successful Planting In Shade & Sun: A Horticulture Symposium with Nan Sinton
8am - 5pm
Horticulture
magazine returns for the second year in a row to lead this day-long symposium with lectures on designing and planting in the limited space of the smaller garden. Stan Hywet is one of just five locations around the US that is hosting this workshop.

October 26
Wizard's Ball
2-5pm
The month of October culminates in the Wizard’s Ball on Sunday, October 26 from 2-5PM. The Grizzled Wizard, P.R. Miller, hosts an afternoon of mystery, fun and magic — and costumes are strongly encouraged. Admission to the ball is $8 for all children ages 2-17. Adults are $4 each and adult members are free.

Friday, November 14
Wine Tasting at Stan Hywet: Wines to Celebrate the Season
7-9 pm
Our final wine tasting for 2008 features champagnes, sparkling wines as well as dessert wines which are perfect for holiday gatherings.Each wine tasting at Stan Hywet includes light appetizers from Two Hungary Sisters Catering and live entertainment by the Rolando Pizana Duo.



December 12-30
Deck the Hall
An annual holiday celebration, where selected rooms of the historic Tudor Revival mansion will be decorated to reflect a particular theme. The estate’s grounds and gardens will offer a winter wonderland of lights. The Carriage House Museum Store will be open with specially selected gift items, and the Café will serve hot chocolate, cookies, and other holiday fare. Stay tuned for more details
