2009 Events at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens
General information about visiting Stan Hywet: We are open Tuesdays through Sundays, 10 am - 6pm. The front gate and admissions open at 10:00 a.m and close at 4:30 p.m. House and guided tours begin at 11:00 a.m. and the grounds are open until 6:00 p.m.
NEW in 2009: We are open late hours on the third Thursday of each month, from 10am - 8pm. Admissions closes at 7:30pm on Thursdays, June - September, and at 6:30pm, Oct. - December
Stan Hywet is closed to the public on Mondays EXCEPT Labor Day, when regular hours apply.
2009 Events
Open Tuesday - Sunday 10am-6pm (admission closes at 4:30pm). The entire estate (including Manor House, Conservatory, garden and grounds) is closed to the public on Mondays. Open late until 8pm in the 3rd Thursdays of the month (admissions closes at 6:30pm on Third Thursdays).
Through October 31 Once Upon A Pond Once Upon A Pond in The Corbin Conservatory is an interactive educational display depicting pond life in Ohio, with programming that will change with the seasons. Two ponds joined by a shallow area in the middle are home to a variety of freshwater fish, including 5 turtles, smallmouth bass, blue gills, perch and catfish; as well as a variety of water plants. This exhibit explores ecosystems, animal life and ecology. During warmer weather, the nearby Lagoon area will serve as the outdoor classroom for this exhibit where there are tadpoles, frogs, salamanders, ducks, painted turtles and box turtles in residence.
Through October 31 Barkitecture A display of one-of-a-kind, whimsical doghouses at Stan Hywet designed for Stan Hywet by local artists and architects. Doghouses are installed throughout the landscaped gardens and grounds. Special programming and “Woof Walks” Sundays take place throughout the 2009 season. Click here for more details.
June 21 Father's Day Car Show One of the oldest car shows in America, the Classic, Antique, & Collector Car Showis an annual Father’s Day tradition at Stan Hywet. This show features classic, antique and collector cars. The Father's Day Car show is presented with the Ohio Region Classic Car Club of America (ORCCCA) and is sponsored by Evans Insurance and Auto-Owners Insurances Companies and WKSU 89.7. Racing package raffle is courtesy of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
Thursdays, June 25 - October 15 - 4-7PM Farmers' Market About thirty vendors will sell locally grown and organic fruits and vegetables, locally raised and hormone/antibiotic-free and grass-fed beef, pork and bison, award-winning cheese and artisan baked goods, cut flowers and other specialty food items near the parking lot at Stan Hywet. There will also be entertainment and cooking demos at each market.
Beginning July 9 Shakespeare at Stan Hywet: As You Like It Shakespeare’s As You Like It is a comedy of Rosalind and Orlando’s courtship played out against the backdrop of rivalry, banishment and exile in the Forest of Arden. Performances are July 9 (preview night), July 10-12, 16-19, 23-25.
Performances begin at 8pm. Greenshow performance begins at 7:30pm
July 19 - 10am-5pm Vintage Base Ball: Akron Cup Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens hosts the 13th Annual Akron Cup Vintage Base Ball Exhibition. The Akron Cup showcases base ball as it was played in the 1860’s.
Beginning July 30 Shakespeare at Stan Hywet: Romeo & Juliet Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare’s tragedy about two teenage lovers whose untimely deaths ultimately unite their feuding households. Performances are July 30 (preview night), July 31, August 1-2, 6-9 and 13-16.
Performances begin at 8pm. Greenshow performance begins at 7:30pm
August 8 Blues & Brews Stan Hywet’s popular ale tasting is a showcase for Ohio craft beers and where microbreweries from around the world will be featured. In addition there is music, and area chefs will host cooking demonstrations and will share secrets for cooking with ale.

September 18-19 Stan Hywet Symposium The Stan Hywet Symposium was initiated in 2007 as a forum for the study and discussion of a diverse range of historical, architectural, and preservation issues. Click here for more details.
October 1-4 Ohio Mart & Stitchery Showcase 10am-5pm, Oct. 1, 2, 3; 10am-4pm, Oct. 4 Ohio Mart is an Akron tradition and features more than 120 artisans and craftspeople. The event takes place on the grounds of Stan Hywet and everything from one-of-a-kind art pieces to tempting and freshly baked treats is available. Organized by the Women’s Auxiliary Board of Stan Hywet, this volunteer-run event is a major fundraiser for the estate; its proceeds are donated to support ongoing restoration and preservation efforts at the Museum.
Stitchery Showcase is presented by the Stan Hywet Needlework Guild and is a juried exhibit of the timeless art of stitchery. Judges in each category (counted thread, canvas, surface stitchery multimedia or quilting) award first, second, third or honorable mention ribbons to entrants. Judging is based on color, design and texture of each piece. The Showcase is open to any needle worker —membership in the Guild is not a requirement.
November 27-29 and December 3-6, 10-13, 17-23, 26-30 Deck the Hall An annual holiday celebration, where selected rooms of the historic Tudor Revival mansion are decorated to reflect a particular theme. The estate’s grounds and gardens will offer a winter wonderland of lights. The Carriage House Museum Store will be open with specially selected gift items, and the Café will serve hot chocolate, cookies, and other holiday fare. Stay tuned for more details
