Girl Scout Brownie Listening to the Past Try-It
Brownies arrive and take a tour of the 65,000 square foot Manor House. Tour guides will focus on the history of Stan Hywet and its residents: F.A. and Gertrude Seiberling and their children and grandchildren. Using primary source documents, tour guides will also tell Seiberling family stories about growing up in this magnificent house. After the Manor House tour, Brownies will have tea in the style of the Seiberling family. Tea will include learning proper tea etiquette, the art of conversation and of course, cookies and flavored tea. Brownies completing all programs will be awarded their Listening to the Past Try-It.
Girl Scout Junior Architecture Badge
Stan Hywet is an excellent example of Tudor Revival architecture. When completed, the house included 21,000 panes of glass, 23 fireplaces, and a parade of gables, bays, and chimneys. The architect of Stan Hywet, Charles Schneider accompanied F.A. and Gertrude Seiberling and daughter Irene on trips to Europe where they studied different architectural styles and visited many homes. The trip served as inspiration for the design of Stan Hywet, and today, the stunning mansion provides great inspiration for budding young architects.
Girls will take a guided Manor House tour which will focus on architecture and learn about Mr. Charles Schneider, the architect of Stan Hywet. After the tour, girls will share their observations with the entire troop, discuss architecture around the world and participate in an activity. Scouts completing the program will be awarded their Architecture badge.
Tiger Cub Scouts
This program is designed for Tiger Cub Scouts ages 6-7, but can be developed and used by any cub scout age group. This activity reaches the "achievements" to advance to the next level in the scouts. This achievement is "Go see it" from the program Making my Family Special. This program shows how family life at Stan Hywet was similar and how it is different from family life today. The planned activities are:
A 45-minute Manor House Tour: The focus of the tour will be on Franklin Seiberling, the youngest son of F.A. and Gertrude Seiberling: how he lived, what he did for fun, how his life was similar and different to the cub scouts.
Experience games that Franklin would have played, such as croquet (weather permitting), marbles, and dominos.
