Stan Hywet's "History on the Move" trunks provide teachers with user-friendly lessons based on the estate's rich past. Each trunk includes lesson plans, photographs, posters, books, CDs, videos, artifacts, and other primary source items that enhance a themed learning experience. The trunks can be tailored for most grade levels and include:
Immigration and the International Influences as Reflected at Stan Hywet Suggested Grade Level: 4-6, with elements for 1-3 Suggested Subject Areas: Social Studies, Reading This trunk conveys an understanding of immigration and the multiple influences of foreign traditions on American culture and civilization through Stan Hywet’s example. Developed using primary and secondary resources available at Stan Hywet and Gardens, this traveling trunk contains artifacts, documents, photographs, instructions, and biographical profiles.
World War II Home Front: The Seiberling Family and Akron Perspective Suggested Grade Level: 10th Grade, with elements for 1-12 Suggested Subject Area: American History Developed using resources available at Stan Hywet, this trunk contains artifacts, documents, photographs, CDs, videos, instructions, and lists which will assist instructors, particularly 10th grade American history teachers, in teaching about life in northeastern Ohio between 1941–1945, the World War II era. Letters written between Seiberling family members during the era are the basis for the materials contained and supplemented by artifacts and letters contributed by volunteers who wish inform future generations about World War II.
The Roaring Twenties and Depressing Thirties Suggested Grade Level: elements for grades 1-12 Suggested Subject Level: History, Social Studies, Reading This trunk explores the political, economical, and social history of the era and relates it to today’s world. Developed using resources available at Stan Hywet, this trunk contains artifacts, documents, photographs, CDs, videos, instructions, and lists which will assist instructors.
Butterflies in Flight Suggested Grade Level: elementary Suggested Subject Level: Science This trunk makes science fun and is the perfect complement to the live butterfly exhibition at the Corbin Conservatory. Learn the life cycle of a butterfly and the different species through books, activities, and hands-on artifacts.
"History on the Move" trunks are offered and delivered for free to schools in Summit County. A nominal fee is charged for one of Stan Hywet's educators to provide onsite instruction. For additional information, contact the Education Department at 330-315-3261 or email education@stanhywet.org.
